Teams go from good to great when:

Incentives/coercion (carrots and sticks) can generally motivate a good team to perform well, but usually not for very long.

A great team performing at its highest level, however, is a different story. It is a team that’s consistently empowered, led, informed and motivated, consisting of interdependent and reliant individuals who are employed and trained within their capabilities.

The 'Check-6 Difference' lies in:

Our ability to put on a hard hat, boots, scrubs, whatever, and immerse ourselves in our client’s environments.

At Check-6, we are a learning organization and highly self-critical. We have decades of unique theoretical and real-life operational experience in some of the highest-consequence environments on Earth.

Greatest lesson learned from consulting teams across the globe:

The detrimental impact of ego.

A true learning culture, where people genuinely want to be better, is ego- and unjust-consequence-free. If I’m uncomfortable discussing my team’s performance, we won’t identify, learn and implement lessons. I once saw a highly respected, very senior, leader step up first during a debrief to highlight the things he did wrong and what he would do differently next time. It was a powerful moment that led to everyone else doing likewise.

Jim “Tango” Gray serves as the company’s Director of the Eastern Hemisphere, where he is responsible for the delivery and management of Check-6 services and clients outside of the Americas.

When he isn’t working, Tango enjoys staying active and in nature, whether skiing, fly-fishing, camping or hiking.

Words of Wisdom: Sometimes we do what we want to do, sometimes we do what we should do. Either way, do something.
