One thing I’ve learned is that maintaining effective communication despite language barriers and cultural nuances is key, especially when it comes to hierarchy. One has to be willing to do their homework before showing up, and even once on-site, be willing to display humility and ask for guidance from the host nation representative so they can show up that much better.

I’ve been fortunate to live in all four times zones of the Continental United States as well as Bahrain, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Across all of these cultures, it is my experience that people thrive on a sense of belonging and on an agreed understanding of what accomplishment and success look like.

How we show up for our clients.

Unlike other consultancies, Check-6 does not sit on the sidelines with a clipboard taking notes from the outside. We are out in the trenches with our clients’ workforce, supporting them when and where it matters most – in high-risk environments.

Incentives/coercion (carrots and sticks) can generally motivate a good team to perform well, but usually not for very long.

A great team performing at its highest level, however, is a different story. It is a team that’s consistently empowered, led, informed and motivated, consisting of interdependent and reliant individuals who are employed and trained within their capabilities.

The detrimental impact of ego.

A true learning culture, where people genuinely want to be better, is ego- and unjust-consequence-free. If I’m uncomfortable discussing my team’s performance, we won’t identify, learn and implement lessons. I once saw a highly respected, very senior, leader step up first during a debrief to highlight the things he did wrong and what he would do differently next time. It was a powerful moment that led to everyone else doing likewise.

Trust, one of the fundamental elements of a great team, is present.

When a team trusts one another, opportunities are opened for healthy competition, conflict and creativity. It’s not about choosing ‘our way’ but rather the way ‘best way’, which leads to a culture of innovation and sustained superior performance.
